Financial literacy is a key component of empowerment, especially for homeless young omen. At Project Kompass, we understand the revolutionary power of financial education and its powerful impact on young women striving to break the cycle of poverty and achieve financial freedom. So does Nixvelisse Andino, Financial Wellness Specialist of Jeanne D’arc Credit Union, one of Project Kompass’ strongest community supporters. “Financial literacy is important for everyone, but especially for women,” writes Andino, “There is a weaker earning power causing bigger financial gaps in employment which makes being financially independent a lot more challenging. There are other factors such as bearing children that can also interfere with the financial plan of a woman as commonly women are made the primary caretakers in their roles. It is important to educate oneself on money management and making smart financial decisions to equip women with the financial power to live stable financial lives. The independence of a woman is also important and should be encouraged as one can never be too prepared.” Nixvelisse, “Nix” has played a pivotal role in equipping Project Kompass’ residents with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of personal finance to pave the way to a brighter future, and has been offering workshops on a monthly basis since the beginning of the year, covering topics such as budgeting, credit, and financial goal setting. Additionally, Nix is able to offer these workshops bilingually in English and Spanish, reaching all of Project Kompass’ residents

What is financial wellness?

According to Nix, financial wellness means “financial security and financial freedom of choice in the present and future”, something that residents of Project Kompass continue to strive for. Residents of Project Kompass have taken a strong liking to Nix, not just for her friendly demeanor and engaging personality, but also for her shared lived experiences. “Coming from a low-income and single-parent household, I can relate to a lot of the disadvantages and challenges those experience,” Nix explained. “I can empathize with wanting to do more for yourself but not knowing where to start or having footsteps to follow. The topic of money can be stressful and without the right guidance or education, it is easy to struggle.” An overwhelming majority of residents at Project Kompass have similar backstories to Nix, coming from single-parent households or lacking guidance and education to navigate personal finances, which have left them struggling to keep up with the demands of rising housing costs. Despite not having this essential support growing up, Nix is determined to be this north star for the residents of Project Kompass: “I want to be able to offer peace of mind and be a reliable resource and support to those who seek to take control of their lives and change it for the better.”

How does Project Kompass know that this partnership with Jeanne D’arc Credit Union is making an impact on its residents?

Recently, a resident of Project Kompass was able to graduate from the program and move into a private, market-rate apartment in Sommerville, MA, after having saved over $7,000 in less than a year. Additionally, another resident was able to utilize the skills learned during JDCU’s financial workshops and create a budget that allowed her to pay off several thousands of dollars in debt and create a dedicated housing-savings plan. This resident, another recent graduate of Project Kompass, highlighted the importance of “learning the difference between needs and wants” as a key factor to her financial freedom. Now, she has moved on from transitional housing and is renting an apartment with a friend, having recently purchased her own vehicle and improving her credit score from the low 400s to the upper 600s. These two residents are just some of the success stories that Project Kompass and Jeanne D’arc Credit Union are proud to share. Every month, more residents resonate with Nixvelisse Andino’s empowering message of financial wellness, and strive to break free of the cycle of poverty they have been chained to for so long.
At Project Kompass, we firmly believe in the power of community engagement to make a difference in the lives of homeless young women. By mobilizing support and fostering connections within our communities, we create opportunities for empowerment, advocacy, and positive change. In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of giving back to the community and highlight our recent participation in Coalition for a Better Acre’s 40th Acre Cleanup day—an event that embodies the spirit of collaboration and collective action.

The Power of Giving Back

Community engagement is at the heart of our mission at Project Kompass. We understand that meaningful change cannot happen in isolation—it requires the collective effort of individuals, organizations, and communities coming together to support one another. By giving back to the community, we not only uplift those in need but also foster a sense of belonging, unity, and purpose.

Mobilizing Support for Homeless Young Women

Our commitment to community engagement extends to our work with homeless young women. Through advocacy, outreach, and partnerships with local organizations, we strive to raise awareness about the issues facing homeless youth and mobilize support for their needs. By engaging with the community, we create a network of support that empowers homeless young women to overcome challenges and build brighter futures.

Spotlight on Coalition for a Better Acre’s 40th Acre Cleanup

Recently, Project Kompass had the privilege of participating in CBA’s 40th Acre Cleanup. This event brought together volunteers from across the community to beautify and revitalize the Acre neighborhood in Lowell. Armed with gloves, trash bags, and a shared sense of purpose, our team joined forces with other volunteers to clean up litter, plant trees, and spruce up public spaces.

Making a Difference, Together

Our participation in the CBA Cleanup day was more than just a volunteer opportunity—it was a tangible expression of our commitment to community engagement and collective action. By working side by side with fellow volunteers, we not only beautified our neighborhoods but also strengthened bonds, forged new connections, and made a positive impact on the lives of those around us.

As we reflect on the importance of community engagement, we invite you to join us in our efforts to mobilize support for homeless young women and create positive change in our communities. Whether it’s volunteering at local events, advocating for policy change, or supporting organizations like Project Kompass, your involvement can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.

It opens doors to post-secondary education, vocational training programs, and apprenticeships, expanding the realm of possibilities for homeless young adults. With access to higher education and specialized training, they can pursue careers that align with their passions and talents, ultimately breaking free from the cycle of homelessness.

For many homeless young adults, the absence of a high school diploma or GED closes doors to employment opportunities and perpetuates their cycle of instability. Lack of a high school diploma or GED is the top risk factor for youth and young adult homelessness. By obtaining a diploma or GED, they gain access to higher-paying jobs, paving the way for financial independence and stability. Leah, one of Project Kompass’ newest residents stated that she “felt behind in life because other people my age were still in high school and had better chances of going to a good college. I felt stuck and discouraged.”

Education empowers individuals, instilling them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to navigate life’s challenges. For homeless young adults, obtaining a high school diploma or GED is not just about academic achievement—it’s about reclaiming agency over their lives. It’s about proving to themselves and the world that they are capable of achieving greatness, regardless of their circumstances. “For me,” Leah said, “earning my GED meant I could move forward in life.”

Education lays the foundation for success in every aspect of life. It equips individuals with critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a thirst for lifelong learning. For homeless young adults, obtaining a high school diploma or GED is not just about academic achievement—it’s about building a solid foundation for future success, both personally and professionally. “Having a GED gives me confidence that I can achieve my goals, especially the ones that require a diploma.” With her GED in hand, Leah is preparing for her next academic adventure with MRC Next Gen, and is looking forward to beginning medical assisting classes in April.

At Project Kompass, we understand the transformative power of education, which is why we are committed to providing educational support and resources to homeless young adults. Through our collaborations with the Aldrich Family Foundation and Greater Lowell Community Foundation, Project Kompass has initiated a $2,500 scholarship aimed toward young adults who may not otherwise have a chance at furthering their education based on their financial status. The JumpStart Scholarship opens on April 1st, 2024, and closes on May 15th, 2024, and is open to any young adult, 18 years of age or older, who resides in Lowell, Lawrence, and the surrounding communities. Applicants must identify as either housing insecure, overcoming trauma, aging out of the foster care system, and/or lacking family support. The scholarship can be used towards vocational training, community college, or four-year college/university expenses, such as tuition, housing, books, and other fees.

As we reflect on the importance of a high school diploma or GED for homeless young adults, there’s an invitation for all to join us in this transformative journey. Support Project Kompass and organizations with similar missions. Advocate for policies that prioritize education and support services for homeless youth. Volunteer your time, skills, and resources to empower homeless young adults to achieve academic success and build brighter futures. In conclusion, education is not just a privilege—it’s a fundamental human right that has the power to change lives and break the cycle of homelessness. Through the attainment of a high school diploma or GED, homeless young adults gain access to opportunities, empowerment, and a brighter future. Together, let’s ensure that every individual has the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams and unlock their full potential, regardless of their circumstances

The issue of youth homelessness in the United States is a significant concern, with an estimated 4 million young adults experiencing homelessness each year, a number likely underrepresented due to the nuances of homeless data collection. Stereotypes surrounding homeless youth can perpetuate negative perceptions, leading to difficulties in finding safe housing and stable employment. Organizations like Project Kompass aim to support homeless young women by providing a fixed residence and program guidelines. However, misconceptions and discrimination from housing authorities and landlords can hinder efforts to secure housing for these individuals. Challenging stereotypes and advocating for fair treatment of homeless youth is crucial in addressing this pressing social issue. The recent experiences of Project Kompass highlight the challenges faced in finding suitable housing options for homeless youth and the need to combat stigma and discrimination in the housing sector.

Project Kompass recently explored an apartment in the Greater Lowell Area suitable for 3-4 single individuals. It was envisioned as a potential new housing opportunity for residents ready to move on from transitional living, but not quite financially ready to move on their own. Priced at $2,400 per month, dividing the cost among four residents would require each to contribute $600, excluding utilities, parking, and on-site laundry. This price was more reasonable than the average market-rate price of $1,400 for a one-bedroom, and more quickly accessible than the subsidized one-bedrooms where waitlists exceed two years.

However, when expressing interest in collaboration, Project Kompass faced reluctance and apprehension from the landlord. This revealed a challenging situation in assisting the young residents in securing independent housing. The landlord asked questions like, “Will you be drug testing them? How can you guarantee that they will pay their rent? We would need to install cameras throughout the apartment to monitor them. You’re going to stop by every day to make sure that the apartment is taken care of, right? Would you help remove them if they didn’t pay their rent so we wouldn’t face court costs?” Project Kompass did not move forward with the collaboration to protect the dignity of our residents.

This encounter was not a one-time incident. Project Kompass also received a call from a different landlord in the Brockton area, requesting a reference for one of our residents who had applied for a one-bedroom apartment. The landlord was skeptical and asked invasive questions
about the resident, such as how she was earning her income, how we could be sure the paystubs she submitted to the landlord were accurate, and if the amount of money in her savings account was earned legally. Project Kompass responded with professionalism and transparency, assuring the landlord that the resident had excelled in our program by taking advantage of the free housing and diligently following a budget and savings plan. Project Kompass also addressed the stereotypes of youth homelessness with the landlord in an attempt to provide education on the causes of homelessness. Ironically, the landlord then shared his own experiences with homelessness and disclosed that he too was once a young adult living out of his car and on the streets, struggling to find and afford safe housing. Despite his own experiences with homelessness, the landlord still engaged in the narrative that homeless youth are untrustworthy.

These questions highlight a significant issue where stereotypes about youth homelessness hinder their access to fair housing opportunities. By perpetuating these stereotypes, not only are individuals struggling to secure permanent housing, but a misleading narrative about homelessness is also being reinforced. It is crucial to challenge these assumptions and promote a more accurate understanding of the complex factors that contribute to homelessness, to foster a more compassionate and effective dialogue on this pressing social issue.

The stereotypes surrounding youth homelessness are harmful and inaccurate, painting young adults facing housing crises as rebellious, drug-addicted, or disabled individuals who are not deserving of safe and secure housing. In reality, many youth experiencing homelessness are in
that situation due to factors beyond their control, such as chronic family economic struggles, rejection based on sexuality or gender identity, unplanned pregnancies, or fleeing unsafe environments. These misconceptions can have serious consequences, making it harder for homeless youth to find housing or secure employment. It’s important to challenge these stereotypes and recognize the underlying issues that lead to youth homelessness, rather than placing blame on the individuals themselves.

At Project Kompass, over 50% of our youth come to us from dysfunctional homes. This includes DCF involvement, chronic parental mental health issues, familial substance abuse, and financial difficulties, all of which are consequences of systemic failures within our society. Some of our residents have even arrived at our doorstep on or before their 18th birthday, dropped off by parents who believe they no longer need to care for their child based on the legal definition of adulthood. Many residents come to us scared or embarrassed, yet they show outstanding resilience. Half have survived out of their cars, while others have couch-surfed with friends or family until they overstayed their welcome. We see many who have escaped domestic violence and sex trafficking. We have never encountered a resident who willingly wanted to struggle with
homelessness, chose to be kicked out of their parent’s home, or happily decided to sleep in their car instead of a warm bed at night. Instead, our residents have struggled due to rising rents and lack of available housing, have been neglected and abandoned by parents who can barely afford
to care for themselves, and have made the difficult decision to sleep in their cars rather than in an unsafe home environment.

In confronting the harsh realities of youth homelessness, it becomes abundantly clear that stereotypes and misconceptions only serve to deepen the wounds of those already enduring immense hardship. The recent encounters of Project Kompass with landlords underscore the pervasive nature of these stereotypes and the barriers they erect on the path to securing stable housing for homeless young adults. It is disheartening to witness individuals who have experienced homelessness themselves perpetuating harmful narratives about the trustworthiness of homeless youth. Yet, amidst these challenges, there shines a beacon of hope—the resilience and determination exhibited by the young adults served by Project Kompass. These individuals have faced adversity with courage and fortitude, often navigating treacherous waters from a tender age. Their stories are testaments to the systemic failures within our society that have left them vulnerable and marginalized. At Project Kompass, we stand in solidarity with our residents, advocating tirelessly for their right to safe and secure housing. We challenge the stereotypes that seek to diminish their worth and perpetuate harmful narratives about homelessness. We strive to foster a more compassionate and nuanced understanding of the complex factors that contribute to youth homelessness, recognizing that each individual’s journey is unique and deserving of empathy and support. As we continue our mission to provide housing, support, and resources to homeless young adults, we invite you to join us in this vital endeavor. Together, let us challenge stereotypes, dismantle barriers, and create a society where every young person has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances. Let us work towards a future where homelessness is not met with judgment and indifference but with compassion and solidarity

The Challenge of Young Women’s Homelessness

Young women experiencing homelessness face a myriad of challenges, from the vulnerability to exploitation to the lack of access to education and employment opportunities. Traditional shelters often fall short in addressing these multifaceted issues comprehensively. Recognizing this, Project Kompass endeavors to redefine the purpose of shelters, turning them into safe spaces that not only provide a roof overhead but also foster empowerment and personal growth.

Beyond Shelter: The Vision of Empowerment Centers

Education as a Cornerstone:

Empowerment starts with education. Project Kompass envisions shelters as places where young women can access educational resources tailored to their needs. From basic literacy programs to vocational training, these centers become hubs for skill development, laying the foundation for a brighter future.

Mentorship and Guidance:

Empowerment centers are not just about facilities; they’re about building a supportive community. Mentoring programs play a pivotal role, connecting young women with experienced individuals who can provide guidance, career advice, and emotional support, creating a network that extends beyond the shelter’s walls.

Health and Wellness Initiatives:

Physical and mental well-being is intrinsic to empowerment. Project Kompass ensures that these safe spaces offer healthcare services, counseling, and wellness programs, acknowledging the importance of a holistic approach to personal development.

Entrepreneurial Opportunities:

Recognizing the potential within each young woman, these empowerment centers are designed to spark entrepreneurial spirit. From workshops on starting a business to access to micro-financing, Project Kompass aims to empower young women to take control of their economic destinies.

Community Engagement and Advocacy:

Empowerment centers extend their impact beyond immediate residents. They become platforms for community engagement and advocacy, raising awareness about the unique challenges faced by homeless young women and advocating for policy changes to address systemic issues.

Realizing the Vision: Project Kompass in Action

Project Kompass is not just envisioning this transformation—it is actively implementing these ideas. By collaborating with educators, mentors, healthcare professionals, and community leaders, the organization is creating a blueprint for safe spaces that empower young women experiencing homelessness.

The success stories emerging from Project Kompass’s initiatives speak volumes about the transformative power of empowerment centers. Young women who once felt marginalized and hopeless are now finding their voices, pursuing education, starting businesses, and becoming advocates for change within their communities.

A Call to Action

As we delve into the realms of redefining shelters as empowerment centers, there’s an invitation for all to join this transformative journey. Support Project Kompass and organizations with similar visions. Advocate for policies that prioritize the unique needs of homeless young women. Volunteer your time, skills, and resources to contribute to the creation of safe spaces where empowerment thrives.

In the pursuit of creating a more inclusive and compassionate society, Project Kompass stands as a beacon of hope. Together, let’s redefine shelters and pave the way for a future where no young woman is left without a safe space to dream, grow, and thrive.
